Audo Output isn't working

Postby bwaskiew on Thu Feb 05, 2009 3:44 am

Hello,

I recently installed Aldrin on 64bit Ubuntu 8.10. I get it running, but when I Edit>Preferences, the Audio Output Driver doesn't have one selected by default, and none of the 3 that show up in the drop down list work. The three that are listed are:

hw:HDA Intel, 0
hw:HDA Intel, 1
hw:HDA Intel, 3

Also, if I run from the command line, after Aldrin starts up and the UI is displayed, it constantly prints out:

RtApiAlsa::callbackEvent: error, current state is PREPARED, Broken pipe.

over and over again until I close Aldrin.

Any ideas? :D

Thanks,
Brandon

RTAudio may not like your setup, so maybe you'll have a better luck with Jack.
It would also be interesting to know which chipset your card is based on...

I tried going through jack, and it worked the first couple times, albeit with some kind of interference. I'm not sure how to describe it; suffice it to say it didn't play back correctly. Now when I try to start jack, it gives an error that it failed, with absolutely no help in terms of why.

I would rather not have to use jack anyways, because that seems like a lot more high-end audio tool, when all I really want to do is just use Aldrin.

I know I did get Aldrin sound output working previously by manually setting the output to /dev/dsp in the config file, but that doesn't seem to work any more.

For reference, my audio is:

Realtek ALC 883 8 -Channel High-Definition Audio CODEC
ASUS Noise Filter
Support Jack-Sensing, Enumeration, Multi-streaming
Coaxial S/PDIF out ports at back I/O

from: http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=1912&l1=3&l2=11&l3=584&l4=0

Is there any way I could figure this out?

To use jack you need a real-time kernel. If you want i can hunt for instructions on how to do it or you can do it yourself.

Oh okay-- I didn't know that. I'll look around to see if it is something I can do.

Thanks for the tip.

Nowadays you don't necessarily need a patched kernel to get decent performance, the Jack FAQ contains good advices:

http://jackaudio.org/faq

Otherwise, do it the dirty/lazy/bastard way: run jack as root (sudo qjackctl) to get RT capabilities.
You will also have to run all the client applications as root - not exactly a best practise, but it has worked for me the last few years :-)

"JACK requires real-time scheduling privileges for reliable, dropout-free operation. The server requests these privileges when running with the -R option. Unmodified 2.6 kernels work much better, but still require special configuration. "
